Bariatric surgery refers to a group of surgical procedures that are performed to help individuals with severe obesity lose weight by making changes to their digestive system. These procedures aim to reduce the size of the stomach, limit food intake, and sometimes modify the way nutrients are absorbed in the body.
Bariatric surgery is considered for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health conditions such as, but not limited to, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or obstructive sleep apnea.
