Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy in Nashville, Tennessee
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, often called a gastric sleeve, is one of the most common weight loss surgeries performed today. In this procedure, the surgeon removes a large portion of the stomach—about three-quarters of it—leaving behind a smaller, tube-shaped stomach, or “sleeve.” With a smaller stomach, you feel full after eating much less food, and because the surgery also lowers the hormone that causes hunger, many patients find it easier to control cravings.
Unlike bypass or more complex procedures, the gastric sleeve keeps food moving through your digestive system in a natural way. That means fewer changes to the intestines, but still powerful weight loss results. For many patients, this procedure becomes the first real step toward lasting weight loss and better management of conditions linked to obesity.
Amazing results are achieved with the right plan!

How Sleeve Gastrectomy Works
The gastric sleeve works in two important ways. First, it reduces the size of your stomach, so you physically can’t eat as much food in one sitting. This is called restriction, and it’s one of the most effective tools for portion control. Second, the part of the stomach that produces most of the hunger hormone ghrelin is removed. With lower ghrelin levels, many patients notice their appetite and cravings decrease, which makes it easier to stick to healthy eating habits.
Together, these changes make it possible to lose a significant amount of weight—without relying solely on willpower or temporary diets.
Who Is It For?
Sleeve Gastrectomy is often a good option for patients who struggle with portion control, constant hunger, or weight-related health conditions that make weight loss more difficult. It may be considered if:
Your BMI is over 30 and obesity is affecting your health.
You live with conditions like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure that are harder to manage at a higher weight.
You want a procedure that is less complex than gastric bypass, while still offering long-term results.
This surgery is designed for people who are ready to make lasting changes to their lifestyle and want a solution that supports both weight loss and better health management.
Patient Journey
Step 1
Candidacy and Evaluation
Meet with Dr. Jameil Abou-Hanna and our team to review your health history, discuss your goals, and determine if a gastric sleeve is the right option for you. We also dive into the insurance you have so we may support you accordingly.
Step 2
Clearance and Visits
You’ll meet with our dietitian to prepare for surgery through nutrition planning, vitamins, and meal guidance. A full medical evaluation ensures you’re cleared for the procedure and identifies any nutritional gaps. You’ll also have a psychological evaluation to confirm you’re ready for the lifestyle changes that come with bariatric surgery.
Step 3
Virtual Support Group
All patients have free access to our virtual support group, where members share their weight loss journeys and experiences. The group meets on Zoom every second Tuesday of the month, giving you a space to connect, ask questions, and stay motivated before and after surgery.
Step 4
Qualification for Surgery
In the weeks leading up to surgery, all of your evaluations and clearances are reviewed together. This includes your medical history, nutrition consultations, and psychological evaluation. These steps confirm whether you’re fit for sleeve gastrectomy and ensure the procedure is safe and tailored to your health. Once cleared, you’ll receive final instructions and preparation guidance for your surgery day.
Pre-Op Preparation
Before surgery, patients follow a structured pre-operative plan designed to make the procedure safer and recovery smoother. One of the most important goals is to reduce the size of the liver. Since the liver often enlarges with obesity, a special low-calorie, high-protein diet is prescribed for 1–2 weeks before surgery. This makes it easier for the surgeon to access the stomach and lowers the risk of complications during the procedure.
During this stage, patients are also guided through vitamin supplementation, hydration goals, and lifestyle adjustments that support long-term success after surgery. These preparations aren’t just about the operation itself—they’re the first step in building the habits that will carry you through recovery and beyond.
Post-Op Recovery
Recovery after a sleeve gastrectomy is a gradual process that focuses on healing, adapting to your new stomach size, and building sustainable habits. Our team guides you through each stage so you know exactly what to expect.
Early Recovery (First 2 Weeks)
- Short hospital stay (1–2 days) for monitoring.
- Walking is encouraged within 24 hours to reduce the risk of blood clots and speed recovery.
- Pain is managed with medication, and patients begin sipping clear liquids.
- Focus is on hydration, pain control, and gentle movement.
Adjustment Phase (Weeks 3–6)
- Progress from pureed foods to soft meals, then small portions of regular foods.
- Daily vitamins and supplements are introduced to prevent deficiencies.
- Energy improves, and light exercise becomes possible.
Long-Term Recovery (After 6 Weeks)
- Patients settle into regular, balanced meals in smaller portions.
- Steady weight loss continues over the next 6–12 months.
- Most people return fully to normal routines, including regular exercise.
- Ongoing follow-ups ensure progress and help manage nutrition.
